Syllabus-in-Action is a new series hosted by The Leadership Undercommons that transforms learning into collective practice. Each event in the series explores a different facet of Black liberation—history, imagination, resistance, healing, culture—rooted in the belief that education is not just what we read, but how we live, love, and build together.
Rather than sitting in silence or consuming content, we show up to share what we know, practice what we’re learning, and create something new—together. The series includes workshops, creative sessions, community rituals, and pop-up learning spaces that are intergenerational, queer-affirming, and joy-filled.
Each event brings a syllabus—or set of ideas, experiences, and questions—to life through embodied participation. We reflect, make art, tell stories, build zines, and dream aloud. From collective reading rooms to abolitionist mapping projects to storytelling circles, Syllabus-in-Action invites our communities to be the authors, the editors, and the keepers of our own curriculum.
Each Syllabus-in-Action event will feature a custom zine designed to help participants engage more deeply with the event’s theme. Whether the focus is on ancestral memory, abolitionist resistance, queer storytelling, or Black joy, the zine will offer reflection prompts, creative exercises, readings, and blank space for participants to write, draw, and dream. It will serve both as a learning companion during the event and a keepsake to take home—something handmade, co-created, and rooted in community. The zine is not just a takeaway—it’s a tool for building literacy, imagination, and practice beyond the event itself.
Sunday, August 31, 2025 | A Black August Share Out | The Table | 1pm - 3pm
Our first installment in the Syllabus-in-Action series is a joyful and intergenerational gathering to close out Black August with intention and creativity. Over the month, many of us have been reading, studying, listening, and reflecting—on the legacy of resistance, the fight for Black freedom, and the wisdom of those who came before us. Now, we come together to share what we’ve learned and what we’re still holding.
